Does Organic Really Matter?

You may hear, "Organic food isn't more nutritious - don't waste your money."

 

However, The Soil Association notes that an organic diet increases consumption of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, live enzymes and essential fatty acids.  

 

 

Despite all our research and scientific advancements in health care, people are getting sicker - not healthier.  Far more people are sick with chronic disease now than when our grandparents were kids and the chemical industry has quadrupled since then! Non-organic food often contains harmful hormones and pesticides. Pesticides are poisonous by nature - they're designed to kill! Pesticides can cause neurological problems, cancer, infertility, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, allergies and asthma, wheezing, rashes and other skin problems, ADHD, birth defects and more.  These are many of the acute (short term) side effects, but the scary thing is that most of the side effects are not acute. They are chronic and will develop after a life of eating dirty food. Therefore you will not notice anything until years down the road. We live and breathe chemicals. Why not cut them out where you are able to? 

 

Buy organic when you can.

 

Refer to the Dirty Dozen and Clean 15 list to understand which produce has the worst chemicals (buy organic) and which produce has less chemicals (not necessary to buy organic).

 

Not only are you protecting your personal health but also the health of the farmers (who by supply and demand would have to produce more organics with less chemicals if we demand it) and the health of our planet.

 

Humans have been farming for over 10,000 years, organically. However in the last several decades we've turned to chemicals and technology for food production to grow more, faster. Unfortunately, this is not making our food healthier, more abundant or doing anything good for our planet. Quite the opposite actually! 
 As a holistic nutrition student and more importantly a conscious being on this planet, I choose organic food as often as possible as this is the single most effective way to reduce my pesticide exposure
.
 

 

I know you might be thinking you can't afford to buy organic but I'm here to tell you that you can! And I've got tips to help you do so:

🌿 Prioritize your organic purchases: If you can't buy all organic food, prioritize buying organic fruits and vegetables that are on the "Dirty Dozen" list - a group of foods that are found to contain the most pesticides.


🌿 Buy seasonal: Produce is always cheaper when it is in season. Take advantage of these lower prices!

🌿 Buy from your local farmers market: Skip the middle man and get straight from the farmer! Not only can you ask questions about the way your food was grown, but you stimulate your local economy when you buy local!

🌿 Grow your own: No garden, no problem! Gather a few pots of your favourite herbs and vegetables, and place them on a sunny windowsill or balcony! Plus, you get the added bonus of knowing you grew them yourself, helping to create a beautiful connection with your food!
