Most yoga mats are spongy and absorbent so they will soak up a lot of sweat and you might not even think to clean it until you can smell it.... Yuk! By this point you are already practicing on a toxic stage. Your liver and kidneys are your main detoxifiers but we also sweat out toxins as well. Your hands and feet have the biggest pours on your body and are also the main points of contact with your mat. I don't think anyone wants to reabsorb their toxins from a sweaty mat via their hands and feet!
There are many different ways you can clean your mat but I'm going to share with you my favourite. It's easy, cheap, natural and chemical free!
1 cup distilled water
1/4 cup alcohol-free witch hazel
5 drops Lavender essential oil (Sometimes I opt for ylang ylang)
6 drops Melaleuca/tea tree essential oil (you can also use lemon)
Glass or plastic spray bottle
1. Combine all ingredients in glass spray bottle.
2. Shake until well combined.
3. To use, spray on mat and wipe dry with towel.
Note: Make sure you shake it before each use. Not all yoga mats are treated the same. Using essential oils may ruin some yoga mats. Spray a test patch on a small part of your mat first to make sure it doesn't affect it.
